As of 11 October 2026, a new US–Iran ceasefire has not been announced. On 6 October, the UN Secretary-General called for an end to the renewed conflict and pointed to its human and trade costs.
What is known.
An earlier ceasefire cannot settle this forecast. It requires a fresh, reciprocal agreement announced by both governments, or formally confirmed by the UN, after 11 October and before the end of 2026.
Why it is a possibility.
The earlier mediation shows that a negotiating channel can exist even during confrontation. Still, renewed fighting and the failure of the previous halt make a durable new public agreement difficult on this timetable, leaving the editorial estimate below an even chance.
What could prevent it.
A previous ceasefire broke down and the UN reported continued conflict in October.
How it will be assessed.
Resolves yes if both the US and Iranian governments publicly announce a new reciprocal ceasefire agreement dated after 11 October 2026, or the UN formally confirms such an agreement, by 31 December. The earlier June ceasefire does not count.
