TSMC has set a striking test for the AI build-out: after reporting US$46.72 billion in third-quarter sales, it now guides to US$52.3–54.3 billion in the fourth. The forecast is that its eventual official quarter result will clear US$50 billion.
What is known.
TSMC reported third-quarter revenue 16.2% higher in US dollars than the preceding quarter and said advanced processes accounted for 79% of wafer revenue. Its own fourth-quarter guidance sits above the threshold at both ends. That turns the question from whether a record is possible to whether orders and production hold through the year-end quarter.
This is a company revenue forecast, not a call on the stock price or a guarantee of demand across the entire chip industry. The outcome waits for TSMC’s fourth-quarter earnings release, not the October guidance or an analyst estimate.
What earlier cases show.
The preceding quarter is the immediate reference point: US$46.72 billion of reported revenue leaves a US$3.28 billion gap to the new threshold. One quarter-on-quarter increase does not prove a durable trend, but the company’s stated next-quarter range supplies a direct operational forecast.
Why it is a possibility.
Strong demand for leading-edge processes and a ramp in the newest node could carry the company over the line. The threshold is below the low end of management guidance, offering a cushion for a modest miss.
Production interruptions, weaker customer orders, shifts in shipment timing and currency assumptions could still pull reported US-dollar sales below US$50 billion. Guidance is made with information available today; the fourth-quarter release will provide the answer.
How the 88% was assessed.
Reference point. The company’s current fourth-quarter guidance of US$52.3–54.3 billion is the anchor, not a historical base rate. No calibrated distribution of prior TSMC guidance errors was calculated.
Why it could be higher. The threshold is US$2.3 billion below the guidance floor, while third-quarter reported revenue was already US$46.72 billion.
Why it could be lower. A short-quarter demand shock, supply disruption or exchange-rate effect could move the result below management’s range.
The editorial judgment. An 88% editorial estimate reflects the guidance cushion while reserving meaningful room for an earnings miss. A rough editorial sensitivity band is 75% to 94%.
Limits of the estimate. The band is not a statistical confidence interval. The published US-dollar result for fourth-quarter 2026 is the only scoring record.
What could prevent it.
Guidance can miss because of customer order shifts, production disruptions, currency effects or a sudden demand reversal. A forecast from management is evidence, not the final result.
How it will be assessed.
Count YES only if TSMC's official fourth-quarter 2026 earnings release or quarterly results page reports consolidated net revenue of at least US$50.00 billion for that quarter, published by 23:59 UTC on 15 February 2027. Revenue stated only in New Taiwan dollars does not qualify unless TSMC itself also reports the US-dollar equivalent. Guidance, monthly estimates and third-quarter revenue do not qualify.
